The EU Batteries Directive
The EU Batteries Directive came into force in the UK on 26th September 2008. Its aim is to reduce the number of batteries sent to landfill while increasing recovery and recycling.
The Directive also bans the use of mercury and cadmium in batteries, except in a few specialist applications, and places other conditions on their use, such as proper labelling and easy removal from products.
Fridges and freezers and indeed other equipment containing refrigeration units must be collected separately from your general waste.
